Steffani & His Silver Songsters

A strange novelty act from the 30's when in the depression they went in for money making stunts like "Pole Squatting" and "Dance marathons" to earn a little extra cash. Steffani had this great idea to glue several small boys onto a grand piano and travel round America, going from town to town, singing and collecting money for the Silver Songsters charity he had set up to provide singing lessons for incontinent children.

My father was a featured soloist with Steffani's Silver Songsters. He performed "Londerry Aire" better known as "Danny Boy"

It never ceases to amaze me who will turn up on these comments! I bow to your superior knowledge "steffani fan" and fugazi. Thankyou for shedding some light on these stars of the past.

I have to disagree with your assertion that the boys were glued to the piano. Not only was there no suitable glue available at this time, but as an ex removal man I am familiar with the method of moving grand piano's. They are stood upright on their longest edge on a small wheeled trolly. This would have had the effect of squashing the boys flat instantly, and making a new choir necessary for every performance

My dad died in 1987 and was a Boy Soprano with Steffani Silver Songsters. We had some recordings but sadly they were lost in a house move and I would love to find some more and hear from anyone who knew him. He was Trefor Gwynfor Harris (known as Gwyn) and was born in 1931 in Bargoed. I have pictures of him in his white shirt and short black trousers and remember hearing a recording of "Bless This House". he was a fan of Ronnie Ronalde and we had some 78 LPS.
